A00105A Island of Stroma on the Pentland Firth

This uninhabited Island of Stroma is situated in the Pentland Firth between the Scottish mainland and the Orkney group of islands. This is a picture of the northern tip of the island where the lighthouse of Stroma stands nearby to Swilkie Point. The island is flat and for the most part surrounded by small cliffs which are at their highest of around 100 feet on the west. The eastern ring of cliffs and rocky foreshore are captured in this picture along with several mainly derelict dwellings. Stroma was inhabited from prehistoric times with various discoveries dating back to this era including a burial site (cairn) to the left of the lighthouse. The island is documented by the Vikings presence and appears to have been occupied continuously through medieval times and the following centuries thereafter until the 1950's when it was abandoned completely. A life existence during all human occupation was difficult and basic particularly so due to its location and harsh conditions resulting in long periods of isolation.
