A00226CX2 Duart Bay on Mull to Lismore Island

aerial pictures of Scotland west coast Islands of Mull
Location, Duart Bay and Duart Point on the eastern coastline of the Isle of Mull off the west coast of Scotland. Duart Castle sits at Duart Point which is located at the end of the peninsula in the middle left of the picture. The castle is built on a rocky outcrop which has obvious strategic advantages with views of all the local sea channels. From here movements of boats could be monitored along the Sound of Mull, Loch Linnhe and northern approaches from the Firth of Lorn. Built on earlier fortifications a castle took shape around the mid 13th century. It was besieged on more than one occasion and was destroyed by the Campbell clan and eventually abandoned by around the mid 18th century. It has since been restored and is a famous tourist attraction on Mull. Approaching from the middle right of the picture is the western isles ferry from Oban as it makes its way towards the Sound of Mull. Viewed looking east towards the southern coastline of Lismore island and the lighthouse islet of Eilean Musdile (middle left).
