A00638B Mallaig

Location, Mallaig seaport on the west coast of Scotland. Historically the countryside had a scattering of farming crofts until the land owner of "North Morar" encouraged the locals to take up fishing as a way of life. Lord Lovat helped develop the area and founded the village of Mallaig in the mid 19th century. The village prospered and grew not only in size but importance especially with the arrival of the railway in 1901, something that nearly did not happen as was a previous plan to terminate the West Highland Railway at Loch Ailort instead of Mallaig. Viewed from above the "Sound of Sleat" (bottom) to Loch Morar at the top of the picture.
