A00709G Lunan Bay and Red Castle

aerial pictures of Scotland east coast coastline
Lunan Bay lies south of Montrose by about 4 miles on the east coast of Scotland. Photographed on a summers afternoon this picture captures the northern beach at Lunan Bay up to the sea cliffs at Boddin Point in the top of the frame. Standing as a ruin on a rocky platform is Red Castle overlooking Lunan Water outlet in the bottom of the picture. The red sandstone castle was laid down by the Scottish King "William the Lion" then modified through time to include its remaining partial tower. The castle was burned in the 16th century then finally abandoned in a state of disrepair in the late 18th century. The long sandy beach is flanked by high sand dunes to the west and ends at the northern cliffs where there are natural caves and huge boulder fragments.
Viewed looking north from above Red Castle.
