A00275B Earlsferry coastal village Fife

Earlsferry lies along the north bank of the Firth of Forth on the east coast of Scotland. It is an ancient settlement that probably takes its name from the days when pilgrims crossed the Forth from North Berwick en route to St Andrews. The 7 mile sea crossing was established by the Earls of Fife in the 12th century. In the bottom left of the picture stands the gabble end of a building said to have been a pilgrims chapel. Earlsferry grew into a prosperous trading port but with the establishment of its adjoining village "Elie" with a safer harbour, Earlsferry became less important. However, with the arrival of steam trains the settlement became a very popular Victorian tourist destination.
