A00362C Old Man of Hoy

Location, the sea cliffs of Hoy. The Island of Hoy is the second largest within the Orkney archipelago north of mainland Scotland. These dramatic sea cliffs on the island face the crashing storms from the North Atlantic Ocean. Standing alone is the tallest sea stack in Britain named the "Old Man of Hoy". Formed from red sandstone it is located on Hoys west coastline. The stack is perhaps only 250 years old and was originally joined to the island but with the relentless storms of the North Atlantic much of the weaker rock in the middle was weakened and reduced to rubble. The cliff lines can be reached by ferry followed by a cross country walk.
