A00588D Cambo Sands by Kingsbarns

Located along the east coast of Fife, Cambo Sands lies between St Andrews and Fife Ness on the east coast of Scotland. The rocky formations are of particular interest in fossil exploration as the exposed surface dates back to the carboniferous period. The landscape looked very different 340 million years ago when evolving plants, amphibians, large insects and reptiles lived in the forests of this landscape. During very low tides tree fossils can be found. The scattered remains of an early 19th century harbour lie at the bottom of the picture and just off the picture to the left of the beach lies the remnants of HMS Success which hit Cambo Brigs rocks in poor visibility in 1914. The crew of the torpedo destroyer D34 abandoned her safely but attempts to re-float her were fruitless. Access to the beach is via a single track road from the historical village of Kingsbarns.
