A00600B Dunnottter Castle

Dunnottar Castle is a medieval fortress built on a rocky headland on the east coast of Scotland. It is nearly 2 miles south of Stonehaven and 14 miles south of Aberdeen city. The castle has certainly had its share of Scottish history and rose to prominence by hiding the Scottish crown jewels form an invading English army under the command of Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century. An earlier event during the wars of independence saw William Wallace attack the castle and capture the English occupants then burn them alive in the church. The castle fell into decline from the early part of the 18th century after the Jacobite rising but from the 1900's it was acquired and partial restoration was begun. It is a must to see and open to the public.
