A00686IX2 Girdle Ness Aberdeen

Location, the headland of Girdle Ness situated southeast of Aberdeen City on the east coast of Scotland. Close to the shoreline stands Girdleness lighthouse built in 1833, some twenty years earlier at Grayhope Bay just to the right of the lighthouse, was the scene of a whaling ship tragedy with only two survivors. Eventually after much delay and debate the construction of a lighthouse was sanctioned and designed by the Engineer Robert Stevenson. To the left of the lighthouse is Nigg Bay and to the right is the entrance to the Aberdeen city harbour and River Dee. Overlooking the entrance on the headland side is Torry Battery which had military links dating back from the 1500's to WWII.
