Dumbarton Rock is a volcanic plug located on the north bank of the River Clyde where the River Leven enters the Clyde. It lies north of Glasgow city. The Rock has a long fortification history stretching back to at least the Iron age. It was known to the Romans during their occupation of southern Scotland in the first century. Mary Queen of Scots was held at Dumbarton in 1548 before leaving for France. Viewed looking south.
