A00246BX2 Isle of May

The Isle of May is situated at the northern entrance to the Firth of Forth, about 5 miles south of Crail coastal village off the east coast of Scotland. Evidence suggests it was inhabited in prehistory times perhaps as early as the Iron Age. Early Christianity established a chapel on the island by the monk attributed as St Adrian of May. In AD 875 the island was attacked by Vikings and all were killed including Adrian. Centuries later after a period of abandonment the island was inhabited again by monks. During the wars of Independence the island was invaded and sacked by the English destroying all the ecclesiastical structures. Today the little island is a National Nature Reserve with an abundance of seabird species. Viewed looking northwest towards Largo Bay in the top right of the picture.
