A00106C Armadale village and Port a Chinn

This remote looking part of Scotland is located along the far northern coast on the mainland about 30 miles west of the nearest major settlement of Thurso. The photograph captures a few Armadale village dwellings that lie to the north of the main road seen weaving across the moorland at the top of the picture. The coastline scenery is stunning with views of rocky outcrops, caves, sea stacks, cliffs and tiny almost inaccessible shingle beaches. Port a Chinn which is in the center of the picture is accessible from the village above and has been used by local crofting fishermen since the 18th century, and probably earlier. The track that cuts across the middle of the picture arrives at the abandoned settlement of Poulouriscaig. Highlanders were cleared from local fertile areas to make way for sheep then resettled at this now derelict site, the last occupants moved to Armadale village before WWII. Viewed looking south.
