A00347A North Ballachulish

North Ballachulish lies left of the bridge in the center of the picture and also at the entrance to the sea loch, Loch Leven (middle). In the mountainous area in the center top of the picture lies the entrance to Glen Coe which saw the cowardly betrayal of highland hospitality in the "Glencoe massacre". Sanctioned by high authority in 1692 the Clan MacDonald was to be wiped out excepting those under the age of 70 by government troops but the plan failed. How many soles escaping were taken by the freezing weather will never be known but there was no massacre as was planned. A year later quarrying for slate in the nearby hillsides started and kept in business until the 1950's. Viewed looking east from above Loch Linnhe.
