A00672C Castlesea Bay by Auchmithie

Three miles north from the ancient Town of Arbroath lies Castlesea Bay on the east coast of Scotland. The beach is a mixture of coarse sand and pebbles flanked by 150 foot sandstone sea cliffs to the north and south. Many naturally formed arches and sea caves have been carved out of the soft red sandstone coastline. These caves are said to have been used by smugglers in days gone by. In the top right of the picture is a row of houses that was used to accommodate the local coast guard in the Auchmithie area. Viewed looking north from above Lud Castle (promontory fort) at the bottom of the picture.
