A00354E Camas Sgiotaig by Cleadale on the Island of Eigg

Location, the northern end of the "Island of Eigg" off the west coast of Scotland. The island of Eigg belongs to a group called "The Small Isles" in the Inner Hebrides. These islands are situated south of Skye. The small bay "Camas Sgiotaig" with its quartz beach is at the bottom of the picture. The lands around are partly boggy moorland with a moorland plateau finishing at the northern tip in the picture (top). In such a remote place trouble was not far as Clans murdered each other. The residing MacDonalds were almost wiped out on Eigg by the MacLeods in 1577. The grim revenge came in 1578 on Skye at Trumpan church where the MacLeods within were burned alive. The marauding MacDonalds were slaughtered before they could retreat. Eviction and deportation of Eiggs inhabitants during the "Highland Clearances" took place in the 1800's to make way for sheep. Viewed from the Sound of Rum.
