A00236BX2 The Bass Rock

aerial pictures of Scotland east coast Islands of the Bass Rock
The Bass Rock is located on the Firth of Forth off the east coast of Scotland. This formidable 350 feet high Island is a volcanic plug at the south entrance to the Firth of Forth. It is said that in the 8th century the hermit St Baldred on occasion retreated to his island Chapel for prayers and contemplation. Where the lighthouse is standing in the picture there stood an earlier castle which was used as a prison from the 14th century. The Bass Rock is a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its huge northern Gannet population.
