Location, 2 miles north of Arbroath town on the east coast of Scotland. A sandstone platform projects from a line of sea cliffs less than one mile south of Auchmithie coastal village. Named "Lud Castle" it was the site of an Iron Age fortification almost surrounded by 100 ft sea cliffs. Connected by a short sloping rampart it overlooks Castlesea Bay to the north in the direction of Auchmithie village which is in the top right of the picture. A coastal path weaves it way from Auchmithie to the promontory fort and continues south to Arbroath.
